Male’ – what to do

Male’ being a very tiny capital where all commercial activities take place and for the pressing need of every possible square feet to be utilized to its fullest use, the town does not have the luxury of a beach. However, one can still enjoy the ocean all around it. A seawall surrounds the island, except for a small area on the eastern side where an artificial beach has been built. Most people assemble here in the late afternoons for some fun with water. It attracts the biggest crowds on Fridays, since it happens to be a holiday. So you need to remember this. Also, women swimmers must wear at least a T-shirt and knee-length shorts
This is where the most and best souvenirs are located. These shops are stocked with a large supply of gifts and souvenir items. Best buys include the Maldivian mat, woven with local natural fibers, and the wooden miniature dhonis. You can also find postcards, sarongs, picture frames, woodcarvings and much more. Prices are negotiable.
There are frequent concerts around Male’. Maldivian music is a blend of Hindi, Arabic, and even some Western pop. A great deal of inspiration is taken from Hindi songs and are incorporated into Maldivian modern songs. Concerts are usually free and are a great way to experience Maldivian culture. However, if you applaud after a song, you’ll find yourself being the only one clapping.
Dive charters are available for rent in Male’ and these take you to some of the best dive spots in the Maldives. There are also number of dive shops in Male’ where you can rent all the vital diving equipment.
Majeedhee Magu is the main road on the island and has various shops stocked with garments, cosmetics, jewellery, handbags, electronics and more. Shops are open until 11 pm.
There is a great surf break in Male’ called “Lonuziyaarai Kolhu.” It is located on the eastern side of the island. Because you don’t have to travel long distances by boat to get there, this break is one of the best and cheapest places to surf.
Villingili, near Male is worth a visit. It takes only 10 minutes by ferry and costs US$.50. Don’t be confused by which ferry to board when you get to the harbor. One of the friendly locals will gladly help you get on the right boat. Villingili is a much calmer pace than Male’. You can relax on the beautiful white beaches, swim, or go snorkeling. There is also a place to rent catamarans, banana boats, jet skis, and other water sports equipment.
